Exporting and Importing your Subscribers
New! Import with just a click using our MailChimp importer!
To access the importer, click on Add Subscribers --> Import from another provider --> Select MailChimp.
Enter your MailChimp API key, click to continue the import, and all your subscribers will be brought over!
If you need to (or want to) import subscribers manually, follow these instructions. The main reason people would do this is to import all the custom fields they have in MailChimp to ConvertKit.
1. Identify which lists you want to bring over
In MailChimp, click on lists from the menu at the top. Choose the which ones you want to export to Convert Kit.
2. Export each list individually
On the list dashboard, simply click Export to begin the process. MailChimp makes this easy, but it does take a few minutes. You will receive a notification on your account and in your email once it's completed.
3. Create a tag in ConvertKit
Inside ConvertKit go to Subscribers, then click "+ Create a tag" in the sidebar. Give your tag a name (it can match the MailChimp list you just exported).
4. Import your CSV
Once your tag is saved click "Add Subscribers" in the sidebar. From there, click "Import a CSV"
In the Import Subscribers box, select the tags you'd like to import to. Then select the file you exported from MailChimp (click and browse or drag and drop it into the box).
Click Import Subscribers and wait. You'll receive an email once the import has finished, but it will usually start within about a minute. If you refresh the page you'll see the subscriber count on your tag start to increase.
4a. Import custom fields
By default, ConvertKit only imports First Name and Email address. If you want to import additional fields from MailChimp, you'll need to set up those fields in ConvertKit before import. Here's how!
- If you don't have any subscribers yet, add yourself by clicking the + button and entering your information.
- Now click on your subscription profile.
- Click on "+ Add a new field" link below the default field.
- Name and add as many fields as needed!
5. Repeat the process for each list in MailChimp
Once you go through it the first time, it's pretty fast to do again. Just select a tag, export, create the tag in ConvertKit, and hit import.
Also don't worry about importing the same subscriber multiple times (if they were in multiple tags in MailChimp). ConvertKit will just apply both (or all) of the tags to that subscriber and won't create any duplicates.
Importing Automated Emails to ConvertKit Sequences
In MailChimp, your automatic emails were called "automations". In ConvertKit, we call them "sequences". Switching those to ConvertKit is simply a matter of copying and pasting the content from one to the other. It can be laborious, but it's straightforward.
When you paste the email in to ConvertKit, you may see some boxes around the content. This is a result of MailChimp's table-heavy formatting with the drag-and-drop builder. Since emails deliver and convert better when they look like emails, you may need to paste the content in section by section. But if it looks clean, it probably is!
Good news! The timing in ConvertKit acts the same way as you are used to in MailChimp. You'll set the email timing to "days since last email". You can even change days to hours for the initial messages or to automate that big launch!
This is a big one. If you just straight copy-paste your images into ConvertKit, they're actually still pointing to MailChimp 🙊 What you want to do instead is download the image to your computer, and then re-upload it directly to ConvertKit. Images in ConvertKit emails look best when they are no wider than 600 pixels (standard email width).
